What is obvious to you is not obvious to others.
Apparent, manifest, self-evident, conspicuous.
But because of the human habit of taking life for granted,
Most not only do not know how they know what they know,
They cannot fathom what another mind might make of it all.
Lazy bastards, is a good description of people who assume;
Laziness unwittingly promoted by tacit complicity
Expecting others to assume a shared stock common knowledge, common sensibilities, common experiences.
We pride ourselves on our individualism, our self-reliance, our independence.
Ironic, no?
I am a totally unique individual, I tell myself.
But I still expect to encounter a large measure of shared values,
Opinions, conceits, experiences, and prejudices
To reassure me that I am in the right company.
Unreflective, might be a good term for this attitude.
Take it all for granted. Just like everyone else.
Don't make me work for it. Life is a given,
And misunderstandings growing out of my laziness
Can be overlooked. Agreed?
